Kevin Speed smashed the River Trent barbel record out of sight with a massive 17lb 2oz specimen from a tidal stretch of the east Midlands waterway.
The huge fish made one half of a stunning brace for over 30lb and fell to a homemade 18mm barrel-shaped fishmeal boilie to beat the existing Trent record - Ray Bayes’ February 2005 fish - by 10oz.
“I’ve only been barbelling for about three years and my previous best was about 9lb, so when I caught the 13lb 4oz fish just before midnight I was over the moon,” Lincoln-based Kev told Angling Times.

PIKE enthusiast Derek MacDonald made fishing history this week by banking his twentieth 30lb-plus pike in the shape of this 30lb 5oz specimen.
Corby, Northants-based Derek drift float-fished a large trout livebait to tempt the huge predator during a session fishing top trout water, Elinor Fishery near Thrapston in Northamptonshire.
The capture makes Derek only the second-ever predator angler to reach the incredible 20 fish milestone, behind Nige Williams.
